Customers love their reel mowers for many reasons, not the least of which is the ability to maintain their own mower easily and inexpensively at home.

All reel mowers are sharpened by backlapping, which means applying a lapping compound to the blades and then causing the reel to spin backwards. The compound rubs between the reel blades and the fixed blade at the bottom of the mower, sharpening both. The fixed blade is called the "cutter bar" by some manufacturers and the "bedknife blade" by other manufacturers. There are several ways to cause the reel to spin backwards. Some professional sharpening shops use expensive backlapping machines to do this. Our kits are inexpensive, easy-to-use kits that work by attaching to the reel shaft either a hand operated crank handle or an attachment made for use with a variable speed power drill or air compression tool. This particular kit uses a manual crank handle. The crank handle is used to spin the reel in the direction opposite of the direction that it turns when mowing.

Keeping your blades sharp is an important part of mower maintenance. Sharp blades give a nice even cut that is less traumatic to the grass, so that your lawn will actually be greener and healthier. It also makes mowing easier because it reduces the resistance to pushing your reel mower through the grass.

The Mascot Sharpening Kit with a Crank Handle works on all manual, power and gang reel mowers with a reel shaft size of approximately 1/2" to 5/8". Snap ring pliers included for removing the snap rings that hold the pinion gears in place on many reel mowers. This kit will work with most of today's manual reel mowers, including the Mascot Silent Cut Reel Mowers, Great States, American, Scotts Classic, and more, as well as many of the older, out-of-production reel mowers that are still in use after several decades including the Agri-Fab Silent Reel, Scotts Silent Reel Mowers, yard Man Reel Mowers and the Smith & Hawkins reel mowers and some older Sears Craftsman models.
